VA Office of Quality and Patient Safety (2019-2025)

VA’s Office of Quality and Patient Safety (QPS) drives quality management, patient safety, and analytic support for the Veterans Health Administration, which is the nation’s largest integrated healthcare system and serves over 9 million veterans each year. As the lead video and multimedia design SME for QPS over the past 6 years, I worked directly with the Associate Deputy Under Secretary for Health (ADUSH) for Quality and Patient Safety as well as the executive leadership of QPS’s three program offices (Analytics and Performance Integration, Quality Management, and the National Center for Patient Safety) to produce or direct production of over 100 videos and multimedia products ranging from animated motion graphics to executive messaging to training/onboarding content and more.

Executive Messaging

Following the onset of the COVID-19 pandemic in 2020, QPS expressed a desire for more direct executive communications with the thousands of employees working in QPS across VA Medical Centers, Health Systems, clinics, and VA’s Central Office. Beginning that spring, we launched a monthly vlog series that ran from 2020 through his retirement in the fall of 2024. These vlogs initially began as remote recordings during the height of the pandemic, but transitioned to direct-to-camera addresses filmed monthly at VA’s Central Office in Washington DC using a mobile teleprompter.

Program Office Motion Graphics and Videos

Outside of direct work with QPS’s executive team, I also worked directly with each of the three program offices to provide educational and promotional motion graphics for various program initiatives and tools. This content often had varying audiences – some content provided key information to enrolled veterans, some provided program or product overviews for congressional leaders, and some were directed to quality and patient safety professionals in VHA facilities across the country. Motion graphics were created using After Effects and followed branding guidelines from both QPS and VHA overall:

Screen Capture Training Videos

I also supported the three program offices by creating training videos for a wide array of software tools aimed at developing, understanding, and measuring progress across all of VHA in their journey towards becoming a high reliability organization. These videos often consisted of a combination of animated motion graphics and animated screen captures of interactions with the tools themselves (captured with OBS and animated in After Effects):
